Sustainability appears to be the mantra of travel in 2022, in the wake of the harmful consequences of mass tourism on the ecosystem, which only began to breathe again - alas - during the forced stop of the pandemic. A new, solid awareness has emerged among travelers all over the world who, having returned to travel, choose with greater care where, how and to what extent to act in order to impact the environment as little as possible. The largest players in tourism have had to - inevitably - follow the sustainability trend: from Booking.com and Expedia to Skyscanner. Airbnb did the same, recently disclosing the enthusiastic results of this change of direction in a note on its official website . Flexible Search tools Nathan Blecharczyk, co-founder of Airbnb and Chief Strategy Officer, focuses on an initial analysis of the performance of the flexible search tools launched by the brand between November 2021 and May 2022.
In particular, the “Categories” , “I am flexible” and “I am (even more) flexible” features aim at a new way of searching for trips and providing a technology-based solution for mass tourism, leading guests to discover accommodation and destinations far from the most saturated hotspots. Currently, approximately 1 in 20 stays on Airbnb are booked using flexible search capabilities The new report “How Airbn Australia Telegram Number Data supports sustainable travel in Europe” includes the first analysis of the impact of these flexible search tools on travel dispersion. The report reveals a shift in bookings from several top destinations to less popular destinations . This trend is confirmed despite a substantial recovery in pre-pandemic travel patterns. Below is some information and highlights from the report, also taken from Skift : Guests using flexible search tools book less often in the 20 most popular destinations on Airbnb in Europe (-17.5%) and more often in the least visited communities.
ranked outside of Airbnb's top 400 destinations (+35.5 %), compared to guests who book via traditional search on the platform. Guests who book through Airbnb's flexible search tool, which offers an option to include a destination without specific dates, are also more likely to book outside the top 10% of popular dates (-7.3%) and are more likely to book nights on weekdays (+5.7%). The flexible search also helps redirect guests about 8 miles further from their originally intended location within cities , compared to those who opt for the traditional Airbnb search. Neighborhood-level analyzes for the cities of Amsterdam, Barcelona, Lisbon, London, Prague and Rome show a consistent shift in favor of bookings in peripheral areas of cities, rather than in the most popular and busy districts. “We want Airbnb to be part of the solution to the challenges associated with the growth of tourism and support sustainable travel trends ,” said Nathan Blecharczyk.
